Hyaluronic Acid. One of the beauty industry’s biggest buzzwords… and for very good reason, as you’re about to find out. But what actually is Hyaluronic Acid and what will it really do for your skin?
I’m here to give you everything you need to know about one of my favourite skin super hydrators, why it’s one of skincare’s finest and most effective ingredients, and why I’ve personally chosen to use it in several Studio10 formulas.
What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Despite its rather alarming name, Hyaluronic Acid is actually a real skincare hero, holding the key to smooth, plump, flawless and hydrated skin.
We commonly associate the word ‘acid’ with exfoliation or facial peels… inducing visions of red, sensitised and stripped-out skin. It couldn’t be more different – it’s the ultimate solution when it comes to helping our skin retain moisture (which is exactly why our skin cells naturally produce it).
Incredibly gentle and calming, it’s a powerful moisture-binding active, delivering hydration where our skin needs it most. Quite incredibly, it can retain over 1,000 times its weight in water, which is exactly how it packs such a powerful hydrating punch when it comes to helping your skin cells stay plump, smooth, strong and ultimately youthful. What’s more, it’s able to regulate the moisture within cells, meaning skin won’t be flooded with hydration. Clever!
Is Hyaluronic Acid natural?
Yes… and no. It is a carbohydrate molecule – a natural component of our body’s connective tissue that maintains skin’s strength and elasticity… and 50% of it is found in our skin, making it a vital part of our ongoing skin health.
As we age, our skin’s natural Hyaluronic Acid levels decrease – heightened also by exposure to pollution, extreme temperatures and other environmental conditions. As a result, our skin attracts and absorbs less moisture; it begins to dull, feel sensitive and rougher in texture; fine lines appear and skin tone is diminished.
In our bid to substitute these diminishing levels, we include Hyaluronic Acid in our formulas… though not in a form that is produced within human bodies; instead we use the finest quality lab-created version.
What does Hyaluronic Acid do for skin?
Because it is a humectant, it easily binds to water (essentially acting like a sponge). Once on the surface of skin, it helps your cells attract and hold onto moisture, therefore revitalising the epidermis (the outer layer of your skin).
… And, as we know, hydrated skin means softer, smoother, plumper and more radiant-looking skin; fewer wrinkles, better tone and suppleness. All in all that’s one big boost to skin health.
So does that mean Hyaluronic Acid can penetrate skin?
Pure Hyaluronic Acid molecules themselves are too large to penetrate skin. Instead, they settle on skin’s surface and attract moisture, which our skin can then absorb.
Recent skincare science breakthroughs have, however, found a way to reduce the size of Hyaluronic Acid molecules, creating Sodium Hyaluronate, which does penetrate the epidermis and therefore provides lasting hydration. And yes, hero Studio 10 products use this also.
What are the benefits of Hyaluronic Acid?
How long do you have?! For something so effective, it’s worth me listing it out.
Is Hyaluronic Acid safe?
Absolutely! Please don’t be put off by its name. As it is a naturally occurring active in our bodies, it poses a very low risk for irritation or allergic reaction.
Will Hyaluronic Acid help clear acne?
Though it doesn’t help directly clear it, it is used in formulas for blemish or acne-prone skin to help draw in moisture and overcome dryness.
Are the benefits of Hyaluronic Acid proven?
Yes, many studies out there have studied and reported on the benefits of Hyaluronic Acid. One that stood out for me was a 2014 study cited in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology.
The panel of women used were all over 40 years old, using Hyaluronic Acid in various serum or cream formulas over a course of eight weeks. The results? A statistically significant boost in moisture (96% to be exact), significantly finer skin structure, up to 55% improvements in firmness and elasticity, and an up to 40% decrease in the depth of wrinkles.
Sold? So was I!
As you all know, I can’t abide by the phrase ‘anti-ageing’. When it comes to our maturing skins however, there’s absolutely no underplaying the importance of Hyaluronic Acid in helping keep our skin smooth and youthfully radiant, and our confidence high.
When should we use Hyaluronic Acid?
As many of your know, the best results come from layering products… which is why there’s every reason to include Hyaluronic Acid – among other powerful skin actives – in both our skincare and makeup formulas.
